The Calling
“God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” Genesis 1:27 (NASB)
The over arching goal of Life Solidarity is to bring together God’s people to present a united voice calling for the defense of life in the womb. Although the practice of abortion is negatively affecting our entire country, the African American community is experiencing a disproportionate impact. In some areas of the country, for example, the number of pregnancies terminated by abortion among African American women exceeds the number of live births. Although this is very alarming, the simple truth that human life is sacred gives compelling reason enough for the people of God to speak up for the defense of the unborn children who are unable to raise their own defense.
Life in the womb was respected by the rule of law for the first 197 years that our nation was in existence. A split decision of the United States Supreme Court changed that in 1973. Ironically, it was an interpretation of the due process clause of the fourteenth amendment that the seven men used to justify elevating the rights of the mother above any right of the child she is carrying. The fourteenth amendment, ratified in 1869, was added to the United States Constitution to ensure that African Americans would have full rights as persons. This amendment overruled the infamous 1857 Dred Scott vs. Sanford United States Supreme Court decision that approved the idea that free African Americans were not legal persons afforded rights under the Constitution and that slaves were property of their owners. Thankfully, there were many who raised their voice for the voiceless ones of the nineteenth century and action was taken to correct a great injustice. Unfortunately, the decision of seven men in 1973 initiated a grave injustice that continues today. Millions of children in the womb, who were essentially considered as property and not legal persons, have been killed by abortion. This cruel injustice and affront to God continues today. The need for a strong voice for the voiceless ones of our day is quite clear.
Sadly, the voice of the people of God has been weak and divided up to this point. Allegiances have been made with political parties that have resulted in either tolerating an advocacy for abortion, or overlooking other injustices. In addition, other differences have been allowed to hinder the forging of a strong alliance that would seek the protection of all life in the womb, as well as address the post birth needs of children and their parents. A beginning point for forging together such an alliance is bringing together pastors and other church leaders from across racial lines and theological traditions to become better informed on the breadth of the issues, dialogue with one another to foster better understanding, and proceed on a path that will honor God by raising a resounding voice for the protection of children in the womb and ministering to the related needs of involved individuals.
